LATEST NEWS: JOE SAYS IT'S SO: DOMBROWSKI SCORES IN ITALY
June 16, 2012

With an epic uphill effort on one of Italy's legendary passes, U.S. National Team rider Joe Dombrowski re-captured the Maglia Rosa at the GiroBio with a brilliant stage win atop the Passo Gavia with just one stage remaining in the race.

Although Dombrowski, who rides for Bontrager-Livestrong U23 squad was 7th overall at the start of the penultimate stage of the GiroBio, 3' behind leader Ilnur Zakarin (Russian National), his great ride on a hot day in the mountains put him back into the race lead and his second stage win, with Fabio Aru (Team Palazzago) second at 43" and  Matteo Di Serafino of Vega Pref Montappone at 2'55".

With a break up the road at 20km to go, Dombrowski attacked from the peloton at the foot of the difficult Passo Gavia and the American climber rode right through the break to win the stage, with only Aru, Italy's top U23 climber able to stay close to him.

After his win, Dombrowski told the Italian media "On the climb, I was concerned with Bongiorno and Aru, so when I attacked I just thought of riding to the finish full gas. I am really happy with
my performance today, but there is still another day of racing."

Sunday we'll have to work hard to defend the jersey and hope nothing surprising happens." Fabio Aru is 2nd overall at 25" with Pierre Paolo Penasa (Zalf Euromobil Desiree) 3rd at 1'10" and Sunday's final stage of the GiroBio is a 123km flat circuit race in Asiago.
