LATEST NEWS: THE CONTINUED RISE OF MEGAN GUARNIER
April 27, 2012

Megan Guarnier of Team TIBCO/To the Top continued to make her case for a spot on the U.S. Olympic road race squad this past week with a pair of top-10 finishes in major races in Europe.

Megan posted a strong 7th place in Wednesday’s infamous Fleche Wallone World Cup. The race was won by another American, Evelyn Stevens.

Guarnier further bolstered her chances with another 7th at the Omloop van Borsele. Guarnier was part of a race-deciding break of that went away just 15 km into the 97km race. With a good mix from the top teams in the race off the front, the break was able to stay away, with Guarnier finishing as the top American in the Dutch race. She closed out her week with a 16th place in the GP Stad Roeselare back in Belgium Sunday. This all followed her 3rd place last Sunday in the Dutch Ronde van Gelderland.

“Megan had a very strong past week in Europe,” said Team TIBCO European Directeur Sportif Angela van Smoorenberg. “She has shown she is at home among the strongest riders in the world, and she is doing everything within her power to demonstrate she is worthy of a berth on the U.S. Olympic Team.”

The combination of Stevens’ win and Guarnier’s 7th at Fleche, as well as the other strong results Guarnier has been posting, have given the U.S. valuable UCI points in the quest to earn the full allotment of spots in the Olympics. The most recent standings have the U.S. as the fourth-ranked country in the UCI standings. The top five countries as of May 31 each receive the full allotment of four riders for the Olympics.
