Megan Guarnier of Team TIBCO/To the Top rode aggressively throughout the entirety of the Nature Valley Grand Prix, and in the final stage, her attacking tactics paid off with the win in the infamous Stillwater Criterium that closed out the six-stage race.
She made her move on the eighth ascent of the notoriously steep Chilkoot Hill, opening up a small gap by the top. By the next lap, that gap had grown to 0:25 and with two laps to go, victory looked more certain as her gap had reached 0:45.
“At that point I was confident that I could get the win,” Guarnier said. “But the last laps are always fast so I just kept focused on keeping my pace high and finishing it off.”
By the end, her gap was down to 0:17 but that was more than enough time to celebrate the win. For the third consecutive stage, she was awarded the race’s Most Aggressive Rider jersey.
The win capped off a strong week for Team TIBCO in Minnesota, with young sprinter Samantha Schneider posting a 2nd place in the stage 4 criterium in Minneapolis, as well as a pair of top-10 finishes.
“The whole Team raced very aggressively all week,” said Team TIBCO European Directeur Sportif Angela van Smoorenberg. “This is one of the biggest races of the year and the field is always strong, and we tried to make every stage hard. Megan’s win to close out the race is a great reward for the Team’s efforts."
