July 25, 2008

Sylvain Chavanel of the Cofidis Team secured the victory today in a 165.5 kilometer stage from Roanne to Montlucon one day before the potential lead changing TT on Saturday.

The 2004 and 2006 National TT Champion of France struggled to overcome a back injury from yesterdays stage,  "I wouldn't have believed it this morning. Last night I had a problem with my back and I couldn't move," said Chavanel. "I had to call the osteopath. So I am a lot happier today. I'm a lot stronger."

The 29-year old rider from Chatellerault is one of the most popular riders in France and after Stage 18 of the Tour shocked the French public by announcing a two-year deal with the Team Quick-Step of Belgium.
