With 1 kilometer to go, team Lotto-Belisol had been doing the lion’s share of the work in the peloton in an attempt to set up their star sprinter, Andre Greipel, but the day would belong to another few fast guys.
Unfortunately for Omega Pharma’s Mark Cavendish, the first stage of the 2014 Tour de France ended with a crash inside the few final hundred meters… ironically, Cav landed on a fan-drawn chalk message saying, “Go Cav!”
The day’s sprint came down to Cannondale’s Peter Sagan, Garmin’s Ramunas Navardauskas, and the eventual winner, Giant-Shimano’s Marcel Kittel.
With his win on Stage 1, Marcel Kittel received the 2014 Tour de France’s first yellow leader’s jersey from British royal family members, Prince Harry (left), Princess Catherine and Prince William.
