Stage 7 was a relatively short 128-kilometer course, but featured well over 10,000 feet of climbing with a steep summit finish.
Peter Sagan took the overall leader’s jersey by winning Friday’s individual time trial.
Thousands of cycling fans lined the sides Glendora Mountain and Mt. Baldy roads.

As far as climbs go, California’s Mount Baldy can rival many of the famous climbs in Europe for its toughness.
When the road kicked up in the final few kilometers, two riders emerged as clear favorites on the day: Etixx-Quick-Step’s Julian Alaphilippe and Sky’s Sergio Henao.
The 22-year-old Frenchman, Julian Alaphilippe, quickly built a gap on Sergio Henao.
Traditionally, the Mount Baldy stage of the Tour of California showcases some of the most interesting and enthusiastic fans found in the U.S.
Julian Alaphilippe held off his rivals and took the biggest win of his career. He also narrowly took the overall leader’s jersey (by 2 seconds) from Peter Sagan.
Peter Sagan put in a scintillating performance up Mount Baldy, finishing in 6th place on the day. He gave up the leader’s jersey to Alaphilippe, however, but the Slovakian is only behind by a scant 2 seconds. Sunday’s final stage of the Amgen Tour of California should be one for the ages.
