THURSDAY, JULY 10TH – STAGE 6 – 194km

Arras / Reims

Tour de France Says:

I have already talked of teams built around sprinters… Well then, I would not be surprised to see a breakaway stick on the day after the cobblestones stage, as we continue to commemorate the centenary on the roads of the Battle of the Somme and the Chemin des Dames. Yes, this is a stage for the brave, with lots of twists and turns towards the end, so the wind could also play a role… If attackers happen to come up short, a power sprinter may prevail on the long, leg-breaking false flat on the final straight. Last year’s Kittel and Greipel would have had lots of fun here.

An important trade fair city in the Middle Age, Arras welcomed thousands of traders on its Grand’Place. Nowadays the biggest pop and rock artists, from Prince to Sting but also the Black Eyed Peas or Ben Harper, are present there for the Main Square Festival. Just before its creation, Johnny Hallyday had also performed there, but only behind the steering wheel of a 4 by 4 car at the start of the 2002 Dakar Rally. The pack of the Tour also took off from the square in 1991 for a stage heading to Le Havre where Thierry Marie had conquered the Yellow Jersey, and a team time-trial in 2004.
