The Start:

Escaldes-Engordany

A newcomer on the course of the Tour, it however isn’t the first time this thermal resort is linked to cycling. Last summer, it indeed welcomed the Vuelta for a stage that went to Lérida and was to be claimed by Dutchman Danny van Poppel. Before him, one Frenchmen, David Moncoutié had also triumphed on the 2008 Tour of Spain, on stage taking off from Escaldes-Engordany.

Culture: Sant Pere Màrtir Church (20th century, dedicated to wool workers), Sant Romà dels Vilars Church (modern construction replacing the original 10th century building), Sant Miquel d´Engolasters Church (12th century), Tosca bridge, Roc del Metge fountain (thermal water at a temperature of 70°C), Caldea Wellness Spa (the largest in southern Europe) and Inuu Thermal Wellness Centre, arts’ centre, Museum of Perfume, Thyssen Museum Andorra (due to open in December 2016). Events: Cirque du Soleil (a show designed specifically for the Principality of Andorra), Colors de Musica (music), saint’s day, feast day

Sport: Bàsquet Club (basketball), Unió Esportiva, Atlètic Club and Inter Club (football), Handbol Club Engolasters (handball), Club Natació Escaldes (swimming), Sprint Club (cycling, includes Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodriguez’s cycling school). Specialities: Trinxat de muntanya (potato omelette with bacon and green cabbage), escudella (soup with pork, pasta and vegetables), cured meat

Sustainable development: 21 cycle paths in Andorra, including 36km at Escaldes-Engordany

 

The Finish:

Revel

The nine visits of the Tour de France to Revel since 1966 have always seen an adventurous rider triumph, from Rudi Altig to Alexandre Vinokourov, not forgetting the likes of Joachim Agostinho, Charly Mottet or Erik Dekker. The capital of art furniture also witnessed the victory in 1969 on a time-trial around the city of the fastest man of his era, Eddy Merckx. Back then, the Belgian claimed his second individual time-trial of that edition before eventually winning his first Tour de France.

Economy: Agro-alimentary production, part of the Pays Lauragais organisation under the name Bio Vallée Lauragais, an alliance of businesses that have encouraged and brought about innovation. The art of furniture-making and the expertise of its craftsmen provided the town with its reputation. Today, lots of shops still preserve antiques while also producing contemporary ranges. High school for arts, crafts, woodworking and furniture

Culture: Hall of Philip VI of Valois, its belfry and galleries (14th century), Get Cultural Centre, Lake Saint-Ferréol and dyke (17th century), wood and marquetry museum, Museum and Gardens of the Canal du Midi. Event: St-Ferréol fireworks

Sport: US Football, RC Rugby, UC Revel (cyclo-tourism), Revel Sprinter Club (mountain biking)

Specialities: Cassoulet, capons, millas (cake made of corn flour), poumpet (layered cake), châtines (chocolate)
