The First Annual Gran Fondo Santa Clarita presented by Road Bike Action is set to roll out on October 22nd with a number of current and former professional riders taking part, including multi-time national champion Daniel Holloway (Team Intelligentsia Coffee), Jessica Cerra (Team Twenty16), Jennifer Tetrick (Team Twenty16) and Jon Hornbeck (Team Holowesko Citadel Racing). A handful of the pro riders will remember much of the Fondo route, since it shares many of the same roads as what the Amgen Tour of California has used in the past.

Three routes are available to choose from: the 100-mile Fondo and 60-mile Medio, which both offer individual rider timing. There is also a 20-mile Piccolo course that uses many of the family-friendly, car-free paseos that wind their way through Santa Clarita. One of the most anticipated sections of the Fondo route is Dry Gulch Road featuring a short section of mixed-surface riding that will provide the opportunity to spend a few minutes on a gravel road. But don’t worry, a standard road setup will be more than adequate as you can see in the video below.

For those that want to add a little more competition to the ride, Fondo riders will have the opportunity to vie for the Muscle Monster King/Queen of the Mountain award on a 1.1-mile ascent. Winners of each age group will be presented with a custom polka-dot jersey by Primal. Gran Fondo riders will also have the full “pro experience” with Mavic providing neutral support during the event for riders in need of a tire change or other mechanical assistance.

After Gran and Medio riders make their way to the finish, they will be treated to food by Stone Fire and drinks from Wolf Creek Brewery. Additional meal tickets will be available for $10. A portion of proceeds of the Gran Fondo Santa Clarita will go directly to the Davis Phinney Foundation to support and help people battling Parkinson’s disease.
