2023 VUELTA A ANDALUCIA STAGE 1 RESULTS

Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar took the lead as the Vuelta a Andalucia began on Wednesday, going alone to win the first stage between Puente de Genave and Santiago de la Espada in Jaen. The UAE Team Emirates rider dominated at the Clasica Jaen Paraiso on his season debut Monday and followed it up with another impressive display.

Favorite to win, two-time Tour de France champion Pogacar took the yellow jersey on the first day with Spaniards Mikel Landa second and Carlos Rodriguez third.

Pogacar attacked 7.5 miles from the finish on the final ramps of the Despiernacaballos climb, opening a gap on the rest of his competitors, unable to follow his change of pace.

Bahrain Victorious rider Santiago Buitrago tried to hold off the attack but was easily shaken off, and came in 38 seconds behind the winner along with teammate Landa and Ineos’s Rodriguez.

Thursday’s 97 mile second stage runs between Diezma and Alcala la Real, featuring a taxing climb towards the end.
