Tadej Pogacar won yet another stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia on Saturday to maintain his overall lead in his season-opening Tour. At just 24-years-old this was Pogacar’s 50th career win and the UAE Team Emirates rider had to survive the crash of key lieutenant Rafal Majka to do so.
“Everybody tried to attack us from the start. It was hard to control,” Pogacar said of the competitive field of World Tour riders on the roster.
“We’re getting tired because everybody tries to attack us. From the start, they tried to put us in a weak spot,” he added.
The two-time Tour de France champion from also won a one day classic in southern Spain ahead of the Tour of Andalucia on top of the three wins from four stages on this mini-tour. Pogacar now leads Spaniard Mikel Landa by 1:14 in the overall standings with one stage remaining. Landa’s Bahrain Victorious team-mate Santiago Buitrago is third.
Some 8 miles from home, Pogacar and Enric Mas dropped the peloton as they went after Ineos escapee Pavel Sivakov, who they caught and overtook. In the home straight Pogacar and Movistar’s Mas went head-to-head with the Slovenian showing superior stamina. Sunday’s fifth and final stage features a category one climb midway through but ends with a 15 mile flat run.
