Colombian Fernando Gaviria edged out Peter Sagan to win stage four of the Tour of San Juan on Wednesday and take the overall lead. The 28-year-old secured his first victory of the season and the 50th of his career by outsprinting Sagan and Italian Filippo Ganna at the end of a 122 mile ride to Barreal. Previous leader Sam Bennett fell away as several sprinters were dropped in the mountains.
Former Tour de France champion Egan Bernal was one of the men to attack and is only 18 seconds behind Gaviria in the overall standings. The Ineos rider will be hoping to make an impact in Friday’s mountain run from Chimbas to Alto Colorado as he steps up his comeback from a horrific crash in training 12 months ago.
