Egan Bernal hobbled out of the Tour of San Juan on Saturday as his Colombian compatriot Miguel Angel Lopez moved to the brink of victory. Bernal, the 2019 Tour de France champion, was in fourth place overall but called it quits early in Saturday’s sixth stage. His Ineos Grenadiers team said he was still feeling the effects of a knee injury sustained in a fall on the opening day in Argentina. Australia’s Samuel Welsford, of the DSM team, claimed sixth stage honors, coming out on top in a sprint finish ahead of Ireland’s Sam Bennett of Bora-Hansgrohe and Fernando Gaviria of Colombia, riding for Movistar.
Lopez, now riding for Medellin-EPM after being dumped by Astana last month, still has a 30-second overall lead on Italy’s Filippo Ganna of Ineos. He is also 44 seconds ahead of fellow Colombian Sergio Higuita of Bora-Hansgrohe. World champion Remco Evenepoel, the Belgian Quick-Step rider, is down in seventh, 1:19 adrift of Lopez. Sunday’s seventh and final stage is a 112.7km run around the streets of San Juan.
