Seven years later, Canyon’s relaunched Aeroad is sleeker, lighter and brimming with unique go-fast features


It was back in 2014 that Canyon first unleashed their highly sculpted Aeroad, which, as the name implies, was their entry into the aero road category of skinny-tire bikes. The bike was an immediate success in both the world of WorldTour pro riders and all the recreational weekenders who dreamed of riding as fast as the pros.

Recently, we drove down to the Canyon headquarters to pick up an all-new Aeroad CFR. While the CFR is Canyon’s high-end effort, the German marque is making the aero frame available as a complete bike for those who don’t want to spend over $4000.


The $9000 black-on-black Aeroad CFR we picked up was equipped with a SRAM Red AXS drivetrain and a pair of DT Swiss wheels. Not that we would quibble with taking hold of their highest-end model (of three available), but still, all black—ho-hum.

For the new bike, Canyon claims it is up to 7.4 watts faster, 14 percent stiffer and 170 grams lighter. In fact, our small frame hit the scales at an impressive (for an aero road bike with deep wheels) 16 pounds.

While the hot-button feature is assuredly the new frame design, the most novel features have to be the proprietary one-piece adjustable handlebar and stem combo. Wait, what?! We imagine you might be wondering how anything that is “one piece” could be adjustable.

Following in the innovative footsteps of their dual-plane handlebar used on their Grail gravel bike, the Aeroad’s stem offers 15mm of height adjustability without the need to alter the steerer tube length, and up to 20mm of width adjustment to the handlebar via a two-piece slotted design.

“What’s more, with their state-of-the-art design, the Aeroad CF SLX and CFR also have completely integrated cables and wires. The Aeroad CF SL features the previous-generation Aeroad cockpit while adding frame-size-specific wheel sizing: sizes 2XS, and the CF SL-exclusive 3XS roll on 650b wheels, so smaller riders also benefit from the Aeroad’s same outstanding riding dynamics. The Aeroad CF SLX and CFR feature 700c wheels across all sizes up to the largest size, 2XL. And, thanks to the chainstays that are 5mm shorter and a combination of a 25mm front and 28mm rear tire, the new Aeroad is even more agile. In terms of geometry, all three Aeroad platforms are identical.


For the high rollers, there will be three different CFR models representing each major component group. The entry-level Aeroad CF SL 7 Disc uses a Shimano 105 drivetrain and Reynolds AR 58/62 DB wheels for $3999, with a Shimano Ultegra (mechanical) model selling for $4399, followed by a $6000 Aeroad CF SLX 8 Disc Di2 Shimano Ultegra Di2. The last jump before the CFR is the Aeroad CF SLX 8 Disc with AXS SRAM Force eTap AXS and DT Swiss wheels priced at $5999.

The consumer-direct Aeroads will be available in a wide range of sizes and, happily, in a range of color combos! Look for a complete test in an upcoming issue.
