In its 13th year, the Larry H Miller Tour of Utah is one of the longest running stage races in America and attracts a field that rivals the Tour of California.
Zion Canyon Village hosted the start of Stage 1, where riders went from the National Park to the finish in Cedar City 84 miles later.
The stage started earlier than usual in order to avoid the summertime heat.
Many of the domestic riders have been training specifically for the Tour of Utah and staying at altitude looking to get any advantage they can over the Europeans.
Kristofer Dahl of Silber Pro Cycling took the win ahead of Axeon’s Colin Joyce and BMC’s Rick Zabel. Stage 2 is expected to be another day for the sprinters, and probably the last. From Stage 3 forward the terrain will favor the climbers.
