Mathieu van der Poel won stage one of the Giro d’Italia by overpowering Biniam Girmay and Pello Bilbao along with the rest of the peloton in an uphill sprint. The 105th edition of the Giro d’Italia opened up with a 121 mile stage in Hungary from Budapest to Visegrad. The race was controlled by the peloton for the mostly ceremonial opening stage which featured an untraditional punchy effort over the final four miles. Over the beginning pitches of the final climb Van der Poel’s Alpecin Fenix team looked in control but Van der Poel alone earned the win over the final mile. Caleb Ewan touched wheels in the final meters and lost control of his bike crashing just before the finish line.

Van der Poel will wear the Maglia Rosa for the first time in his career during stage two’s 5.7-mile individual time trial around Budapest.
