Just a year after Giro released the Synthe helmet, they’re now offering a Synthe TM MIPS, a design that incorporates a technology that can provide more protection in certain impacts called Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. The helmet is being worn at the Tour de France by the BMC Racing Team, Katusha Racing Team, and IAM Cycling and will be available in August 2015 for $270.
“The Synthe MIPS is a testament to the energy and resources that we put into helmet design. By combining our advanced research and design capabilities, as well as our close association with MIPS Technologies, we continue to pursue new ideas that can give riders what they demand,” said Giro Marketing Manager Amanda Schaper. “We’ve taken our greatest lessons that we’ve learned in Giro’s thirty-year history wrapped up into one extraordinary helmet. And it is so rewarding to see it embraced by three different teams at the Tour.”
Key features of the Giro Synthe MIPS include:
• MIPS Technology: MIPS stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System and Giro’s testing shows that it can provide more protection in certain impacts. There are three main components to a MIPS-equipped helmet: the interior foam liner, the Low Friction Liner and an elastomeric attachment system between them. In an angled impact, the elastomeric attachment system stretches to allow the interior foam liner to rotate independently around the rider’s head and redirect energy. Although the system only moves a few millimeters Giro’s testing shows that helmets equipped with this technology can reduce the amount of rotational force that may be transferred to the brain in certain impacts.
• Better Aerodynamics: Using Wind Averaged Drag, a formula that takes into account 72 different yaw angles and calculates a single drag measurement for a standard head angle of 30o and speed of 25mph, the Synthe MIPS is more aerodynamically efficient than any road helmet Giro tested, including the acclaimed Air AttackTM.
• Light Weight: At just 260g for the CPSC-certified version in size medium, the Synthe MIPS is competitively light while still offering a fully adjustable fit system, adjustable strapping and dedicated ports for securely docking
