ITZULIA BASQUE COUNTRY STAGE 6 RESULTS
Colombia’s Daniel Felipe Martinez claimed the 61st edition of the Tour of the Basque Country on Saturday as local rider Ion Izagirre won the final stage despite falling 2 miles from home. Izagirre of the Cofidis team, who clinched the 2019 edition on his home ground, touched Jonas Vingegaard’s rear wheel on the final climb to Arrate. He tumbled to the ground but still managed to claw back the stage lead to sprint away ahead of Aleksandr Vlasov and Marc Soler, who had also fallen a few miles earlier.
Ineos rider Martinez was fourth on the stage and was able to depose overnight leader Remco Evenepoel who fought gallantly but was left behind three miles from the line. Izagirre was second overall, 11 seconds off the pace ahead of Vlasov and Evenepoel.
Defending champion Primoz Roglic, who had led after the first four stages before being caught by Evenepoel, finished eighth in the standings, more than three minutes behind.
