NAHBS is just around the corner, the TDU is underway and common bike fit fixes you may need. Welcome to the January 16th Mid-Week Report!
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Okay, so you say you’re a bike geek? A bike lover? A cycling aficionado? Well, if so, don’t say you haven’t been given ample warning. During the second week of March the North American Handmade Bicycle Show will be returning to Northern California for three days only. And this my friends is where you will not only find some of the most beautiful people, but better still, some of the most beautiful bikes in the world.
For over a decade frame builder and show founder Don Walker has hustled his ass around the nation trying to promote the ancient craft of handbuilt bikes. And every year, no matter what the destination of the roving show, he’s been able to outdo himself from the previous year. The Sacramento venue has twice already provided the biggest crowds in the show’s history and this year should be no different.
Here is just a collection of some of the hand-built bike brands that will be on display. These bikes and many more will be there ready for you to ogle over and even purchase. All these photos were kiped from the NAHBS Facebook page so you can go there to get more updated info – there’s only two months to go so get your travel plans in order.
WORKOUT WEDNESDAY: 3 COMMON PROBLEMS FITTERS SEE
Bike fit is more than a collection of angles and distances, and before we start measuring or moving anything it’s important to talk with the athlete and examine the bike they brought in. Here are three common problems we’re looking for, and that you should consider for yourself.
Worn-out and damaged gear
A lot of you out there are riding gear that should have been updated a long time ago. Saddles break in, and then they break down. Personally, I’ve found there is a sweet spot for my favorite saddle model that starts a few months in and lasts 3-4 years. It starts a tad stiff, then we have a few good years together, but eventually it needs to be replaced.
DECEUNINCK-QUICK STEP’S MAX RICHEZE INVOLVED IN A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT
Maximiliano Richeze, a winner of nearly 30 wins at pro level and one of the best lead-out men in the peloton, was cycling near Buenos Aries while preparing for the forthcoming Vuelta a San Juan (January 27-February 3), his first race of the season, when he was involved in an incident with a car.
Initial medical evaluations revealed that his injuries are not serious, with some trauma to the right knee and abrasions on the hip, back and elbow on the right side. However, on medical advice, he will visit a hospital on Friday for a precautionary scan, with the hope that he will be given the all clear
THIS JUST IN: BONTRAGER CIRCUIT STORMSHELL JACKET
Bontrager’s Stormshell jacket kept us dry in the rain the last few days here in SoCal. A durable waterproof outer and insulated inner kept us comfy on our rides. The adjustable wristbands added extra warmth, it is regularly priced at $140 but is on-sale now.
ENVE COMPOSITES SPONSORS BELGIAN WAFFLE RIDE FOR 2019
The Canyon Belgian Waffle Ride is going into its 8th year and continues to be celebrated as one of the most unique and challenging one-day cycling events in America. This year, on May 5th, ENVE will be at the party as the official wheel partner of the event. The Canyon Belgian Waffle Ride is notorious for its difficult dirt sections, which are woven throughout the 136-mile San Diego County, California route, providing the ideal environment for ENVE wheel technology to shine.
With 46 dirt miles consisting of half-buried rocks, sand pits, and technical singletrack descents, in addition to 90 miles of pavement, wheel and tire selection become one of the most critical equipment decisions there is. “Having ridden every edition of the BWR, I know how imperative choosing the appropriate equipment is for not only making it to the finish, but having a positive experience on the day. Efficiency and flat prevention are key, which are both things ENVE brings to the table in our wheel designs”, said ENVE’s Neil Shirley.
2019 TOUR DOWN UNDER
New Zealand time-trial champion Patrick Bevin swooped to take his first cycling World Tour stage and claim the overall lead in Australia’s Tour Down Under on Wednesday.
Bevin, 27, riding for the CCC Team, capitalized on confusion in the peloton sparked by a mass crash inside the final kilometre of the 122-kilometer (70-mile) second stage to power home in the finish.
The Kiwi unleashed a sprint on the uphill 700m finishing straight to reel in Spain’s Luis Leon Sanchez before holding off Australian star sprinter Caleb Ewan and Slovakia’s former triple world champion Peter Sagan at the line.

RIVET RAID 1/20
Set over 55 miles with 6,500 vertical feet of climbing, on paper it may look easy enough but it will still put a sting into your legs. It quickly heads to Dirt-Mullholland (which fortunately escaped the fire) then makes its way towards Santa Monica to the 1st aid-station, the brand new 10 Speed Coffee, awaits. Here you’ll be able to order that espresso or cortado you might have missed at the start and get yourself revved up for the rest of your ride. Next it heads north along PCH, surveying some of the scared landscape before turning up Puerco Canyon for a cramp inducing climb. Between gasps of air, this will be your chance to take in your surroundings and admire the ocean vistas that the Santa Monica Mountains afford us.
