WORKOUT WEDNESDAY: PROS AND CONS OF PROTEIN POWDER
Initially, this article was going to be about all the reasons endurance athletes don’t need protein shakes, but that wouldn’t really be fair or accurate. There are some very good reasons for cyclists, runners, and triathletes to consume protein shakes, but they are also often overused, used for the wrong reasons, or used in place of better alternatives. If you use protein powder or are considering using it to boost protein intake, consider the following pros and cons.
Pro: Older athletes benefit from increased protein intake
Growing evidence supports the notion that older adults (50+), particularly older athletes, benefit from increased protein intake. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for protein is .8 g/kg (about .5g/pound), and increases to 1.2-1.7 g/kg for endurance athletes. Athletes proactively working to gain muscle mass, and athletes in high-power, high-intensity training (e.g. sprinting) may benefit from consuming up to 2g/kg/day, but there is little evidence that consuming above 2g/kg/day adds much additional benefit.
ROBERT DEMARTINI NAMED CEO OF USA CYCLING
The USA Cycling Board of Directors has named Rob DeMartini as president and chief executive officer of
USA Cycling. DeMartini joins the organization from New Balance Athletics, Inc. where he spent the last 12 years as president and CEO. He will begin his new position in February 2019.
“Our entire Board and management team enthusiastically welcome Rob as our new CEO. His passion and ambition for both the future of USA Cycling and our sport is inspiring. He also brings the proven leadership, commercial skills and resources to elevate USA Cycling and to do more for our members, partners and athletes,” said Bob Stapleton, USA Cycling Chairman of the Board.
During his time at New Balance, DeMartini accomplished one of the highest periods of growth in the athletic footwear and apparel industry, driving the company from $1.5 billion annual revenue in 2007 to $4.4 billion in 2018. He led the expansion of international sales and guided the brand as it regained its position as a leader in specialty running while also focusing on cultivating company culture.

FFWD WHEELS SPONSORS TEAM ARKEA-SAMSIC
FFWD Wheels and French Pro-Continental squad Team Arkea-Samsic are happy to announce their partnership for the period of 2019 to 2021.
Formerly known as Fortuneo-Samsic, Team Arkea-Samsic has a long history in the cycling peloton with Tour de France participation the past five years and a strong roster of riders such as Andre Greipel and Warren Barguil.
“We are very happy Team Arkea-Samsic has chosen to be a part of TeamFFWD from 2019 onwards. We are confident that we can support the team with strong riders like Andre Greipel and Warren Barguil to go even faster than they already are!” states FFWD Marketing Manager Rik van Putten.
General manager of Team Arkea-Samsic, Emmanuel Hubert adds: “Going faster starts with good trust in our materials. Riding with light, fast and strong wheels is an obligation. That is why we are really happy with this new 3-year partnership. During our training camp in December, our riders have tested the wheels on Spanish roads. Our CX man already uses the wheels. Season 2019 starts rapidly, with confidence.”
90 YEAR-OLD CYCLIST CAUGHT BY DOPE TEST
Carl Grove, a 90-year-old American cyclist, has been stripped of his age-group title and world record from the US Masters Track Championships after failing a doping test.
The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) issued a public warning Friday to Grove for a violation they said likely came from consuming meat contaminated with a banned substance.
Grove had won the 90-94 age group individual pursuit crown in a world record 3mins 6.129secs last July 11 at Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. He was the lone competitor in his age group.
