14 YEARS OF GOLDEN MEMORIES

The statement announcing the cancellation of the Tour of California from promoters Anschutz Entertainment Group, while unfortunate, was not terribly surprising. In fact, for some veteran race watchers, it was long overdue. Despite having no shortage of picturesque and historical race venues throughout the state, this was California, after all. And no matter how bright the sheen of the Golden State, regulation and the threat to traffic flow often conspire to the detriment of any outdoor activity that involves the public highways and byways. We are a content and happy lot here, but block off a few roads and make it hard to get to the mall and we see red!       

As many relationship-ending notices read, it began with plenty of good things to say about all the players involved and the good times had. But then came the crux of the missive—after 14 years of some dramatic racing, the race had “become more challenging each year to mount the race.” As such, for the year 2020, the Golden State would not be hosting some of the world’s best teams and riders.

CYCING IN ICELAND ON THE LAUF SEIGLA

When it comes to incredible places to ride your gravel bike, Iceland has always been at the top of my list since I first discovered it back in 2015. I have been lucky enough to make many trips to pedal a bike on the island, and it is without a doubt the perfect environment for a gravel bike. It also happens to be the home of one of the most proactive and innovative bike brands in modern gravel, Lauf. As many of you have probably read, the Lauf Grit fork and True Grit bike have been on my personal must-have list for years. With all of the new technology, research and developments in the gravel world, the Lauf products have always been ahead of the curve and stood the test of time.

So when I got an invite from Lauf to travel to Iceland to see something new, I was hoping it was a finalized version of one of the three patents they had teased back in late 2019 that featured lightweight and tuneable rear suspension. They were pretty tight-lipped before landing on the island but as it turns out we were there for something else.

BINIAM GIRMAY STILL CANNOT RIDE

Biniam Girmay is still resting but should resume training in the next 10 days, his team Intermarche said on Wednesday, as he recovers from being hit in the eye by a prosecco cork while celebrating his historic Giro d’Italia stage victory. Girmay became the first black African to win on any of cycling’s three grand tours when he claimed the honors on the 10th stage of this year’s Giro.

“Biniam Girmay underwent new medical screening in Belgium on Tuesday, following the eye injury he sustained during the Giro,” Intermarche said.

“His eye requires further rest and Biniam is expected to resume training within the next ten days.”

Girmay had placed the bottle on the floor and bent over it as he undid the binding before the cork flew off, hitting him from close range. He was treated at a hospital in Jesi, where the 10th stage finished.

GIRO D’ITALIA STAGE 17 RESULTS

Colombian rider Santiago Buitrago won the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday to claim the biggest victory of his career. Richard Carapaz maintained his overall lead, keeping hold of his three-second cushion on Australian Jai Hindley with four stages remaining. The 22-year-old Buitrago finished the 105-mile mountain stage around 30 seconds ahead of another young cyclist, Dutchman Gijs Leemreize, while Jan Hirt, winner on Tuesday in Aprica, was more than two minutes back in third place.

“To win a stage in the Giro for me is exceptional, especially after the huge disappointment of my second place in Sunday’s stage,” said Buitrago.

“I wanted to win this stage. This victory is for my family in Colombia and all the people who have supported me up to now.”

Carapaz, Hindley and Spaniard Mikel Landa stayed with each other and made little impact on their positions in the overall standings. Joao Almeida lost ground again and gave up more than a minute on Carapaz and Hindley.
