MID-WEEK REPORT: THE LATEST NEWS, PRODUCTS AND EVENTS

Take a look at the best of our trending stories from this week September 8, about the latest road bikes, tech, pro racing and more in the cycling industry.

THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL FOR CYCLISTS

One of the most overlooked aspects of a bicycle are the small numbers printed on almost every stem, bar and seatpost, the max torque rating. That small print is just overlooked as cyclists quickly make adjustments. But if you have ever had a bar slip on a ride or maybe even worse, heard that terrible sound of carbon cracking as you tighten down a bolt then you might want to think of investing in a torque wrench.

Many torque wrenches are either large and expensive tools that you wouldn’t really want to take out of your workshop area or they are the small single setting type (probably 5Nm) that you toss in your bag. The latter never seems to be the correct Nm setting or has the wrong size bit needed to complete the task.

Recently over at the lavish RBA HQ we got in two options that seem to fill that void perfectly. Not only will they save you from crushing a set of bars or breaking a bolt but they make easy work of most tasks thanks to their ratchet style design. They are very similar in design, almost identical, but each offers its own unique features.

2021 VUELTA A ESPANA STAGE 21

Primoz Roglic (SLO – Jumbo – Visma)

Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic sealed a third successive Vuelta a Espana title after wrapping up the final time-trial stage on Sunday. He becomes the third rider to have won the Spanish Tour three times after Tony Rominger of Switzerland (1992, 1993, 1994) and Spain’s Roberto Heras (2003, 2004, 2005). The Jumbo-Visma rider finished 14 seconds ahead of his closest rival, Magnus Cort Nielsen, in the 20.5 mile time-trial at Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain, the 21st and final stage. That gifted Roglic the biggest overall winning margin, of 4:42, since 1997. Spain’s Movistar rider Enric Mas, whom Roglic lapped on the time trial — a discipline in which he is Olympic champion, finished second, with Australian Jack Haig of Bahrain Victorious rounding out the podium.

MAMMOTH GRAN FONDO CANCELLED

Press Release

With the recent closure of Inyo National Forest and strained firefighting resources during these difficult times, we are sad to announce the cancellation of the 2021 Mammoth Gran Fondo. While there are no fires threatening Mammoth Lakes or the surrounding areas at this time, wildfires continue to spread across the west and firefighting resources are extremely limited. Our thoughts are with the firefighters and communities across the west affected by these fires.

Refund Options
There are three options for your 2021 Mammoth Gran Fondo registration – receive a full refund through imATHLETE with no penalty, defer your registration to the 2022 Mammoth Gran Fondo scheduled on September 10, 2022 or donate your registration fee to support youth programming in Mammoth Lakes. Instructions for each option are available on MammothGranFondo.com. Any riders that have not opted for one of the 3 options by November 1, 2021 will be automatically deferred to the 2022 Mammoth Gran Fondo event. If you have any other questions, please send an email to [email protected].

EROICA CALIFORNIA CANCELLED

Dear Friends of Eroica,
Due circumstances surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and above all, not wanting to add more tension to an already very complex situation, together with local partners we have decided to postpone this years’ edition of Eroica California. The new dates for the event are now set from April 29th to May 1st, 2022, where we are already focusing our energies to once again welcome you to the roads of the Central Coast.

We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and complications that this decision implies for all those who were already registered, but thereasons for this decision are, we believe, clear and robust: to protect the participants and guests of Eroica California, as well as the citizens of Cambria, Cayucos and San Simeon, against the risk of a resurgence in the pandemic at some time in fall 2021, and to guarantee the international participation that has characterized this event since the very beginning. Obviously, such diverse attendance, the hallmark of Eroica California, will remain unfeasible in the coming months.

And in case one more reason was needed, we need to maintain the inner nature of Eroica California. Beyond the ride through the stunning landscapes of the Central Coast, this event is meant to live special moments full of friendship and good wine. Strict compliance with health protocols, which in principle will remain in place, would profoundly distort this experience.
