ZAP’S COLUMN & THE PRICE THAT’S PAID FOR PR

Best Irony of the Year—it was an award that could’ve been found in my tally of “Best of 2017” call-outs in the “Edtors’ Choice” story in the January 2018 issue. At the time, inclusion of a Best Irony award was complicated for various reasons. The first being that it brought with it a potential minefield of personal and professional conflicts. Second, the honor itself, while singular in nature, actually involves a collection of disparate issues. And last, I really wasn’t sure how relevant the Best Irony would fare with you the reader.

FIRST LOOK: FRANCO LATIGO RS1-D

We were quite excited when Franco dropped off their all new Latigo RS1-D to our office which will be one of our next test bikes for an upcoming Road Bike Action magazine.

Quite possibly the main reason why we love this bike so much is that it is actually manufactured in Northern Italy, utilizing Torayca’s top-of-the-line MJ series carbon. It isn’t made in Asia and then shipped to Italy where a “made in Italy” sticker is applied which is how some other bicycle manufactures go about it.

Take a look here to see more on the latest Franco.

3T INTRODUCES 1X TORNO

The new Torno crank has been designed by co-owner and 3T art director Gerard Vroomen. It combines the aerodynamic knowledge of 3T with the carbon engineering and production skills of 3T’s sister company THM.

Thanks to its aero-optimized design, the Torno represents the perfect complement to the Strada and Exploro aero frames. The crank arms are very thin, thereby reducing their drag and lowering the Q-factor, so the rider can ride with a more aero foot position. The profile is very deep and elliptical, further cutting down drag. The structural design combines the right crank, spider and carbon axle into one part, increasing stiffness and reducing weight.

The new Torno weighs a mere 330g and is offered in the LTD range.
