The Hell of the North brought the flames this year as the podium ceremony was taken up a notch from year’s past.
The rider’s lucked out with the weather as there was a possibility of rain for Sunday, but clear skies allowed for less than muddy conditions.
A first for Peter as he has never won Roubaix which brought much excitement from everyone post finish.
The battle at the front, Peter bridged up to the breakaway and Dilllier was the only rider left to duke it out with the World Champion.
Marcus Burghardt (GER – Bora – Hansgrohe) – Daniel Oss (ITA – Bora – Hansgrohe) – Niki Terpstra (NED – QuickStep – Floors) all look for the best line.
Marcus Burghardt (GER – Bora – Hansgrohe) skips the cobbles and takes the grass for his preferred line.
Looking ahead is especially important in Roubaix as Jasper Stuyven (BEL – Trek – Segafredo) looks for his next line.
The main winning selection can typically come from the Arenberg Forrest.
During most professional races it’s hard to see any room in between the riders in the peloton, during Roubaix, not so much.
Taylor Phinney (USA – EF Education First – Drapac) was the only American in attendance and was able to finally crack the top 10 in Roubaix.
The Belgian National Champ Oliver Naesen (BEL – AG2R – La Mondiale) didn’t have the race he planned as he fell off the lead group whenever the pace would turn up.
Jasper Stuyven (BEL – Trek – Segafredo) doesn’t even get time to take his helmet off and catch a breath as he’s bombarded by reporters.
The break out rider during Paris-Roubaix goes to Silvan Dillier (SUI – AG2R – La Mondiale) as he wasn’t even sure he would be able to line up after recovering from his broken finger.
Sep Vanmarcke (BEL – EF Education First – Drapac) was up front all day but ultimately missed the winning move and didn’t have much left in the legs at the finish, he would go onto finish sixth.
The calm before the storm, Silvan Dillier (SUI – AG2R – La Mondiale) and Peter Sagan (SVK – Bora – Hansgrohe) mark each other before opening up for the finishing sprint.
Before the velodrome though, Peter Sagan (SVK – Bora – Hansgrohe) and Silvan Dillier (SUI – AG2R – La Mondiale) had to go through rough cobbles and screaming fans.
There weren’t many disc brakes in the race as rider’s needing a change of wheels can take some time with the team cars so far behind.
Tanguy Turgis (FRA – Vital Concept) navigates his way through the cobbles with one leg.
If you win the cobbled classic, you receive a cobble.
Wout Van Aert (BEL – Verandas Willems – Crelan) was up front once again until a derailed chain took him out of the lead group.
Peter Sagan (SVK – Bora – Hansgrohe) claimed his first Paris-Roubaix victory in spectacular fashion.
The crown of the cobbles is normally the safest part of the sectors.
