“Mind games , yes, the breakaway is full of mind games. You have to play mind games with your opponents in the breakaway, you have to play mind games with the peloton, and you have to play mind games with yourself.
“YOU HAVE THREE FIGHTS”
1. One is with the peloton to maintain or increase the gap.
2. You have one fight to beat your opponents, to drop them or beat them in the sprint.
3. And then you have to fight yourself because you’re always on the limit.
“The biggest mind game is with the peloton – you have to make them think that they are in control while you are controlling the breakaway. You have to control the gap – once they put it at two minutes you have to make them think that they are controlling you while you are two minutes ahead and you control when they are going to start to chase.”
