Just off one of the main aisles at the Interbike show in Las Vegas, a small booth caught our eye. It was a simple setup, one bike on a trainer and a single table with four sets of derailleurs shifting themselves. We had to stop and see what was going on and who was controlling the actuation.
It turns out that ProShift has developed a system for all of the current electronic groups from Shimano, Campagnolo and even the new SRAM eTap. They are using proprietary algorithms that keep the rider in the optimal gear automatically and in real-time. The system uses data from the bike and rider to make these real-time adjustments. The display shows the gear you’re in, power/torque (if using a power meter), speed, cadence and heart rate. The system uses ANT+ connectivity for all the measured sensors. There is a manual override in case you want to do your own shifting but will jump back into automatic after a few seconds unless you put it in manual mode.
To connect the ProShift unit to your current electronic shifting system they are currently offering three separate units for each brand. The Shimano and Campy systems plug into the junction box in the cockpit while the SRAM eTap system works wirelessly just like the rest of the system. The units themselves have tabs that are compatible with Garmin style mounts to be used as a solo unit or in conjunction with your computer.
Pricing is set at $799 and the system is compatible with all the Shimano Di2 systems: Dura-Ace, Ultegra, XTR and Alfine, as well as all the Campagnolo EPS offerings of Athena, Chorus, Record and Super Record. SRAM eTap is also supported.
