In the days before we headed to Emporia. Kansas for this years Unbound Gravel, we got word that not only would German tire brand Schwalbe be releasing a new gravel tire – the G-One RS – but that the man behind the gravel tread would also be in attendance. That man is Peter Krischio and he’s been a main man designing road/gravel tires at Schwalbe for 12 years.

We caught up with Schwalbe tire designer Peter Krischio just after he came in from testing his tires on the flint rock roads.

Peter told us that the RS designation of the new 465 gram (40mm) tire refers to Race Speed and uses three different types of rubber to maximize performance and durability.

In addition to winning the men’s 200 race, Cynthia Frazier also relied on the new German treads to win the 350 mile women’s XL race. on her 3T Exploro.

Road speed with cyclocross grip: After intensive development and testing efforts, Schwalbe is proud to add a very special tire to its five-tire gravel quiver, G-ONE RS. Schwalbe´s fastest gravel tire.

2015, when gravel was just a new word with little meaning to many cyclists, Schwalbe launched its first dedicated gravel tire, the G-ONE Allround. Seven years later Gravel has grown into a full-on cycling segment with specific new products, events and a spirit that gave the cycling community a fresh perspective. Racing has always been a very important driver for Schwalbe and the R&D Team and the continued evolution of gravel racing offers additional motivation.

After Amity Rockwell won Unbound in 2019 on a pair of G-ONE Allround and placed second on G-ONE R in 2021, it became clear more speed was needed. The RS tire center piece has a special designed scale structure, zig-zagging herringbone, which depending on the rotation direction will give the rider more braking traction or steering grip – and make the tire go super-fast. To maximize the benefit of these characteristics, the G-ONE RS has different rolling directions for front and
rear wheel use.

G-ONE R has the grip but additional speed was the goal, now G-ONE RS has 20 % less rolling resistance compared to the R. To solve the rolling efficiency of the tire a semi-slick version was the clear direction Schwalbe needed to go. The inspiration for matching grip came from Schwalbe’s own cyclocross tire X-One-Speed.

The unique shaped scale shape center profile of the G-ONE RS has a special design aspect to it. Giving it additional steering grip or braking power depending on the rotation direction and of course way more speed.
