One of the first bikes we saw as we walked down the rows of the Sea Otter Classic was this Bontrager bike sitting in front of Trek. At first we thought (hoped) that Keith Bontrager was back on the working end of a welding torch, but no, The one-off frame in reality was merely acting as a show piece made to help display all the latest Bontrager carbon parts. Still, it was cool to have a moment of nostalgia in looking over the new parts.
The Bontrager brand began in the Santa Cruz area in the late 80’s when the former factory Honda MX mechanic started building frames. Trek bought the brand from Keith in ’92 before re-launching the brand as Trek’s in-house component brand. It’s only fitting that Trek decided to give a nod to Bontrager’s legacy at the Sea Otter Classic which is close to home for the brand.
