Stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana’s 83 mile course between Antequera and Valdepeñas de Jaén was a promised to be punchy and explosive, and the riders delivered. A suspenseful finale played out as the 8000 feet of climbing pegged on the day forced big efforts out of many riders. EF Pro Cycling’s Magnus Cort attacked from the breakaway on with just over 10 miles to go.

Magnus Cort held a 20 second lead as he crested the category 2 Puerto de Locubin. However, he was within sight of the peloton as the descent began. Cort then pushed the gap out to 30 seconds on the descent. The final 20 percent slopes in Valdepeñas de Jaén proved to be decisive as the peloton reeled Cort to within 3 seconds. Enric Mas pulled Primoz Roglic passed Cort with 300 meters to go. Roglic took advantage of the draft to jump to the win in the final straightaway to gain a few seconds on his nearest GC competitors.

Intermarche Wanty Gobert’s overall race leader Odd Christian Eiking was able to ride within his limits in the Roglic group to hold onto the red jersey. However, the 26-year-old’s lead over Primoz Roglic fell to 1:56.
