STAGE 16 RESULTS – LA VUELTA A ESPANA 2021

Stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana covered 112 miles from Laredo to Santa Cruz de Bezana on the northern coast of Spain. Uncharacteristically moderate temperatures in the low 70s gave the racers some respite from the 100-degree plus heat wave that has stricken the first two weeks of the race. American Quinn Simmons made it into the days initial breakaway, however the relatively flat course appealed to the sprinter’s team which reeled-in the 5 escapees with 6 miles to go. The final 3 miles featured a small riser with a downhill run into the finish. The high-speed finale played out with Deceuninck-Quick Step controlling the field into the barriers. Quick Step was swarmed but the green jersey of Fabio Jakobsen was able to maneuver into position through a narrow, winding final mile and execute a powerful sprint to win stage 16 ahead of Bora Hansgrohe’s Jordi Meeus and UAE’s Matteo Trentin.
