Stage 19 Unexpectedly Cancelled Mid-Race
Tour organizers blame 112 degree temps melting snow and hail
As racers were descending the Col d’Iseran during Fridays’ stage 19, race officials pulled up in cars around the various groups of leading riders and flagged them down as announcements were made over race radio making the previous summit of the Col de L’Iseran as the point finish times would be taken. The roads ahead of the race were flooded and covered in melting snow and ice due to extreme 112 degree temps making conditions unsafe to race.
At the top of the Iseran, Egan Bernal was ahead of Julian Alaphilippe by over 2 minutes making him the over all leader by at least 30 seconds. Race officials are still calculating finish times.
“Rider’s safety first, that’s what’s important,” said a Deceuninck Quick Step manager.
