Geraint Thomas and Team Ineos took their early start time and vaulted themselves into the lead of the 2019 Tour de France stage 2’s team time trial. The defending champ sat in the hot seat for over two hours until their lead started to crumble.
Second to last team to start, Deceuninck Quick Step, went through the mid way time check 8 seconds ahead of Ineos and look to threaten their lead. However, the Belgian squad started to lose steam and charged into the finish line less than a second behind Ineos. Then Stage 1’s winner Mike Teunissen and his Jumbo Visma team, clocked a time 24 seconds ahead of Ineos halfway through the course. The Dutch squad and the yellow jersey went on to hold a 20 second lead all the way into the finish line to take the stage win and keep the overall lead.
Thomas and his Ineos team kept their composure on camera but their disappointment could be felt throughout the final kilometer of Jumbo Vismas time trial.
