Up Close: Nibali’s Giro Winning Specialized Tarmac

When Vincenzo Nibali rode to the line of this year’s Giro d’Italia, his Specialized Tarmac was already covered with a splashy, custom paint scheme that set his bike apart from all of those ridden by his Astana teammates.

This is how Nibali’s Specialized Tarmac rolled at the start of the Giro. The custom paint pays homage to his nickname “The Shark.”  The Team Astana bikes roll on French made Corima wheels, Campagnolo drivetrains, SRM power meter, Tacx cages and FSA components.

However, what occurred between that first stage and the last when the peloton rode into the finish in Turin was what many are calling one of the greatest comebacks in cycling.  By all accounts, with just four stages left to go, Nibali was considered out of the running for the overall win. And then, with just three stages left, the road climbed up and between his renowned climbing prowess, a never-say-die attitude, and yes, a bad crash by race leader Steve Kruijswijk, the crafty Italian grabbed the pink jersey and held it to the finish.  And with it came a new Tarmac replete with a chromed pink finish that truly was befitting of the now two-time Giro winner’s solid effort.
