Video: Wout Van Aert Out of the Tour de France After Time Trial Crash

Stage 13 bad luck for Van Aert

Belgian Wout Van Aert clipped a barrier at high-speed and was thrown off his bike during stage 13’s individual time trial. Van Aert was lass than a kilometer from the finish in Pau when he crashed in one of the final corners. Van Aert stayed on the floor wrapped in a the barrier cover until the race doctor arrived on the scene. The Belgian national time trial champion was a favorite to win the stage, and was on track for a top 5 finish.

Van Aert suffered a right thigh wound and blood could be seen streaming down his leg. The 24-year-old was forced to abandon his first Tour de France. Van Aert is slated to undergo surgery to repair the wound and will remain in the hospital for several days.
