As Julian Alaphilippe rolled into the final hundred meters of Liege-Bastogne-Liege it looked like the Frenchman had a chance for redemption after his celebration gaffe just 6 months earlier where Primoz Roglic sprinted past as Alaphilippe prematurely posted-up. However another Slovenian, Tour de France champ Tadej Pogacar  pushed Alaphilippe to the limit overtaking the world champion in the final 10 meters for the win to close out the Spring Classics.

Alaphilippe was graceful in defeat.

“Tadej is a phenomenon, everyone knows that. From the moment he started to last year’s Tour de France he’s always been there at the big moments,” he said.

“I’m quite happy with second all things considered. He was pitch perfect today. So hats off to him.”
