2021 GIRO D’ITALIA: TOP SPRINTERS
After recovering from Covid-19 early this year, Peter Sagan has gone on to win two races including one last week in the Tour de Romandie. The former three-time world champion appears primed to produce in the sprints following a long drought of wins last season which was broken by success late in the year at the rescheduled 2020 Giro.
Viviani has struggled in the WorldTour since joining Cofidis in 2020. The former European champion has racked up 1 podium at the top-level this season. Viviani will have little room for error and a lot to prove when the first opportunity at a sprint is available in stage two.
26-year-old Australian Caleb Ewan is set to continue to dominate the sprints aided by his Belgian Lotto-Soudal team. Ewan has five podium finishes this season including a win in the UAE Tour and finishing runner-up in Milano SanRemo.
The reigning European Champion, Giacomo Nizzolo was on a hot streak when the peloton returned to racing last season, earning the Blue and Gold Euro jersey along the way. This season has proven difficult for the 32-year-old Italian as he’s been missing from the top step so far.
After reportedly testing positive for Covid-19 multiple times last season, Gaviria has struggled to produce this season. A third place result in Tirreno Adriatico is the Colombian’s top result.
