WHAT ABOUT THAT FSA 64 TOOTH CARBON CHAINRING?

By Zap

There’s no doubt that some of the most talked about bikes in the 2022 Tour de France have been the wild-looking Cannondales ridden by the EF Education-Easypost team. Thanks to the squads partnership with Palace skateboards, the team bikes shocked the often staid appearance of Tour bikes when they rolled out of the Stage 1 start box in Copenhagen.

Helping the team standout have been a variety of new components supplied by team sponsors Full Speed Ahead and Vision Tech  including new wheels, handlebar extensions and a massive 64t carbon chainring used by Stefan Bissegger.

During the recent Eurobike trade show in Frankfurt,  the FSA Vision booth had a EF Education-Easypost team bike on display and I used the opportunity to get a rundown of the sponsored parts with FSA’s Matteo Palazzo. The first thing I inquired about was the news of Bissegger using a massive 64t chainring.  Although the team bike on display was running a 58t chainring (above), Matteo said he had a  sample of the 64t big ring hidden away.

After disappearing for a few minutes, Matteo returned with the really big, big ring  (below) and went on to explain that unlike the 58t ring that used a steel insert for mounting, thanks to a special glue used to produce the 64t which brought with it an added level of stiffness and durability, that the carbon ring saves additional weight by being able to mount directly to the crank arm.

The solid carbon 64t chainring was developed specifically for the EF Education team and FSA said due to the manpower required to produce the handmade rings, they have no plans to make them available to the public.

WHEELS & HANDLEBARS

METRON 91
Team EF Education – Easypost renew the collaboration with PALACE to create a special collection for the Tour de France. For this reason we made special TFW and Metron 91 wheels to match the graphic designs that PALACE made on the bikes and riders clothes. This was not only a customization work, we had to study the best way to not increase the weights and lose the quality of our wheels. We went through this big challenge and in very short time we give to the team 9 of the most beautiful wheels ever made.

After a year of study and tests we will launch the new METRON 91. the new front TT wheels, specifically build to be the fastest wheel on the market.
• Full carbon rim;
• inner width: 21 mm – specifically made to works perfectly with 28mm tires;
• PRS hub with ceramic bearings;
• 21 aero bladed spokes (specific design)
• weight: 938 gr
The 91mm height turns out to be the most aerodynamic shape and also the fastest. in fact the new METRON 91, can be 15.18 seconds faster than other competitors in a 40km TT. During 2022 Tour de France the 91s will be used by Bahrain-Merida and Team EF Education – Easypost.

Its ultra performing 3K carbon fiber construction for great stiffness and low weight. With aero performance optimized, ceramic bearings minimize mechanical losses. The handcrafted TFW is all about going fast, and it’s unique using an ultra-light paint that improves aerodynamics: in nutshell The Fastest Wheel in the World Tour.

For our Team we develop special aero extensions for each athlete we work with. The fully custom carbon extension, based on ours Metron TFE and TFA are hand build starting from the arms measures and shapes, to perfectly fit and being as much comfortable and allows the rider to reach the best performance. We develop every custom extension in the wind tunnel for the most aerodynamic position. All that without forgetting the weight, trying always to have the strongest and lighter pieces, for example we reach to have a full custom extension that weights only 120 grams.
