FLASHBACK THURSDAY VIDEO, 1988: ANDY HAMPSTEN & THE GAVIA PASS

It was perhaps the biggest race day in Andy Hampsten’s celebrated career. And ironically, he didn’t even win! But it was this snowy day at the 1988 Giro d’ Italia that has since brought a new definition to the concept of  “suffering”. The video captures the day well, but it’s really at about the 7:25 mark when the full realization of what the riders endured becomes clear. It was a hard, agonizing day…and one that saw the great American cyclist Andy Hampsten slip on the pink leader’s jersey.
